The Triumph of Orthodoxy

On this Sunday we celebrate something apparently with little to do with the Fast:  the Triumph of Orthodoxy, that is the restoration of the honouring of images (icons) by the Seventh Ecumenical Council in 787 A.D.  But the theme of the day is Faith, faith in the God who is glorified in the saints, the God who in Jesus Christ took on himself and glorified the matter of the cosmos in his body, and through his death redeemed the whole creation.  But we fail to live up to that measure – hence the need for repentance; and the offer of redeeming grace is always there if we turn back to God – this is our hope; and the witness of the saints gloriously present through the material of icons and carvings, is the ground for our faith in the promises made in the gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ,
