On this last Sunday of the Fast, the fifth, we commemorate St Mary of Egypt. Her moving life has been read to us the previous Wednesday night/Thursday morning during the penitential Matins of the Great Canon. She who in her great sinfulness was prevented from entering the church, who then completely repented and spent the rest of her life as a solitary in the desert where, finally, after a life of weeping for her sins she finally gained rest and a place in heaven. She above all is our model of ascetic repentance.
