On this day we recall the story of the Expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise. In other words, we come face to face with our lack of perfection; with our innate tendency to prefer our individual will to communion with the Godhead; with all that falls under the ugly word “sin”, but which is nothing other than Death, because what we are actually called to is Life. So on this day, after the Divine Liturgy, we celebrate the first service of the Great Fast (Lent) and at the end of it we each ask forgiveness from the others. In this way we set out on our “journey across the great sea of the fast” at peace with each other.
