From Vespers, 6th. December

Cave, make ready; for the Ewe-lamb has come, bearing Christ in her womb. Manger, receive the One who by a word frees us who are born of earth from irrational action. Shepherds abiding in the fields, bear witness to the fearful wonder; and Magi from Persia, offer gold, frankincense and myrrh to the King; because the Lord has appeared from a Virgin Mother. Bowing low like a slave his Mother worshipped him, and cried out to the One in her arms, ‘How were you sown in me, or how did you grow within me, my Redeemer and my God?

NEWS

PARISH 70th Anniversary:

This year, being our Parish’s 70th Anniversary, we shall have a special service on Wednesday, 19th December at 5.15 p.m. The first service our parish celebrated seventy years ago (actually on December 12th) was in the Chapter House of Bristol (Anglican) Cathedral. This year we shall celebrate Vespers and a Thanksgiving Service, again in Bristol Cathedral. This time, however, we shall be using the Lady Chapel. More details soon, but BE THERE!

We shall sing Vespers and a Thanksgiving service in Bristol Cathedral Eastern lady Chapel at 5.15 p.m. We shall have a number of distinguished guests.

The first requirement, though, is for us as a parish community to be there! We want as many as possible to be there. Our choir have been busy practising for a couple of months already. You won’t get another chance for SEVENTY YEARS!

The second thing is that it is OUR celebration, so we have to do things. There will be a reception afterwards with a glass of wine and mince pies etc.

It would help a lot if you could let us know if you are coming, so we know roughly how many mince pies to buy! Please email Robert ( <little.mole@gmail.com>) or see him in church this Sunday.

FOODBANK

CHRISTMAS is coming. 130,000 children in the UK will be homeless this Christmas. In total 320,000 people will have no home of their own.

The food bank box needs contributions every week, but especially at this time of year.

Non-perishable food items with a best before date a minimum of six months in the future.

Also especially toiletries and personal care items, such as plasters, tampons/sanitary towels, toothpaste and shower gel.

CO-OP GIFT

Thank you to all of you who have nominated our church with the Co-op to receive charity donations: this week we received a cheque from the Co-op for £4,009.03 pounds! Please continue to nominate us. See: HELPING YOUR PARISH below.

################################

REGULAR REMINDERS:

REMEMBER YOU NEED TO PAY FOR PARKING IN THE STREET NOW, EVEN ON SUNDAYS and you only get TWO HOURS! Parking in the nearby West End multi-storey is quite reasonable, though.

CLEANING UP REMINDER: Please keep the church floors, especially the carpets, free from crumbs and food remains!

SINGING IN THE CHOIR

SINGERS STILL WANTED! Come and give it a try! Really! Please come and help. We may sound fine, but for us to continue to do so we need additional confident singers in all four parts – sopranos, altos, tenors, basses.

HELPING YOUR PARISH

In addition to using Amazon Smile for online purchases:

1) Remember: Every second Sunday of the month we have a collection.

2) USE YOU CO-OP CARD to our benefit!

This year we have successfully bid for funding to cover most of the cost of upgrading the stonework of the porch, and been nominated to receive charity donations from Clifton Village Co-op. If you live within 15 miles of Clifton Co-op and have a blue Co-op membership card, you can vote for more of their charity donation to come our way whenever you visit Clifton Co-op.

3) Use https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/ for your online shopping – Amazon, John Lewis and hundreds of others. You just access your usual site via the easyfundraising link, selecting our church as your chosen charity, and they give a percentage of your purchase money to the church. It’s easy once you have done it once. And it all adds up.

LEARNING ABOUT OUR FAITH

CHILDREN’S AND YOUNG PEOPLE’S CATECHISM CLASSES

If you wish to enrol your child/ren see Lydia in church on a Sunday.

ADULTS

It is not only the children who need to learn. Very few of us have had the benefit of specific learning about our Orthodox faith.

Henry (Cuthbert) McGrath is running a group for teenagers and adults, teaching about aspects of our Church and its faith. If you would like to join in with this just ask him in church on a Sunday or email him (secretary@bristol-orthodox-church.org.uk).

SALES:

NEW DISPLAY CABINET!

**We have a new display cabinet for items for sale (Thanks to Lydia!)**

We have items to sell. If you have any requests, please let Lydia or one of the other councillors know.

We already have mounted icons for sale in church, including mounts by Raluca McKett. Have you seen her Facebook page (Raluca Ortodox Icons) yet ?

Kate Hearn has always got a selection of home-produced jams, chutneys, etc. – even honey sometimes – for sale after the services.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

PLEASE NOTIFY US AT ONCE OF A CHANGE OF EMAIL ADDRESS OR POSTAL ADDRESS OR PHONE NUMBER
